End of Summer Blog Party

Some of you may be surprised to see me posting on what I call "my old blog". Well I'm still able to post words and whatnot, so I'm going to do "Wordy" posts on here. My new blog will be my photography blog.

Anyway, onto the Bree's blog party (and giveaway... click on the button to check it out!) I'm entering.

Blog party and Giveaway @ He Designs My Life

  1. Do you belive that Christ is the only way to Heaven? Yes, I do. Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." That's clear enough to my way of thinking.
  2. Do you have any specific requirements in your future husband? If so, what are they? Oh, sheesh. This is a question that I could do a whole post on. Some of the more obvious ones are - is he a Christian? What does he believe? Does he want to leave our number of children up to God? The one's I've thought of that aren't as obvious are - will he be willing to go camping, picnicking, etc. So, yeah... that's just the tip of the iceberg.
  3. What is your favorite Bible verse? Psalms 56:3 "When I am afraid, I will trust in You." If I'm fearful I love knowing that I can trust God to be in control.
  4. Who inspires you? Oh... uhh... besides God and my parents... err... I think I'd have to choose Stonewall Jackson.
  5. What is your favorite part about my blog? You. You're so fun and unique! :)
  6. Shoes or no shoes? Well, I prefer no shoes, although I have an ankle/arch problem that makes it to where I should probably wear shoes at least outside.
  7. Lemonade or iced tea? Lemonade!! Ice tea... well, let's just say my taste buds don't find it very tasteful. :)
  8. iPod or computer? Both - PLEASE?!! Well, I don't have an iPod yet but it's next on my wish list.
  9. Flats or heels? Flats... of course. Why do I want to wear ankle breakers?
  10. Writing or reading? Reading. You wouldn't want to see some of the stories I used to write. They. Are. Lame. Super lame. No plot, ridiculous characters... and so on and so forth.
  11. Rain or sun? Rain, rain go away... come back maybe after a few days? You probably have guessed my answer. Sun!
  12. Shorts or skirts (in the summer)? I never wear shorts by themselves. I wear skirts year round, day in and day out - partly because I don't have any pants/shorts, partly because skirts are super comfy, partly because I want to, and partly because the ones I wear are modest (aka... never above mid calf and NOT tight).

My Opinion on Robin, Alice, and Amy

No, I do not know Robin, Alice or Amy. They aren't friends, they aren't relatives, and aren't real (except maybe Robin... although I think he was called something else in history). But I have watched their movies. :) So here is my reviews on their stories.

Recently I have seen some movies that I really like... and I don't post about movies unless I like them. If you haven't seen any of these movies, trust me, there are no plot spoilers (at least not major ones). And if you have seen any of these, feel free to drop me a note to tell me what you think. :) I love comments. :)

Little Dorrit (2009)
My Rating: 5 stars
Synopsis: Amy Dorrit is the daughter of a debtor who has been in debtors prison since before she was born. It is all she has ever known. But her luck is changing for good... by the hands of the Dorrit's friend Aurthur Clennam. And then there is the mysterious Rigaud - who is he and what does he want? How will Mr. Dorrit handle this change of fortune and who will Amy choose of the two men who are vying for her affections?
Starring: Claire Foy, Matthew Macfadyen, Andy Serkis, and Tom Courtenay

Okay first off, I really, really liked this movie. I would own it and probably watch it once a year or so. It is a ton easier to watch than read Dicken's, even for an avid reader like myself. The characters are complex and capture your attention. The sets were so interesting and help set the mood of each scene very well. I found myself getting lost in Amy's world - savoring it in fact. But at the same time, I would not recommend this for any one younger than 14 years. The story can have intense parts in it that are just not suitable for younger children.

When I borrowed this TV series from a friend, she told me that Aurthur Clennam was a really sweet character. I did not know what she meant until I watched Little Dorrit. That friend was right... and I was surprised at how "Mr.Darcy" could be so charming. Although he seemed to be too so sweet and easily pushed around by Flora, that I was slightly disappointed by him at times. But he's still a favorite character. :)
And just for your reference... the picture below is Flora. In all her childish, annoying glory. The picture and my two word description of her should tell you what she's like - "...in those long gone days gone by."

Then there is Miss Amy Dorrit. She is pretty, hardworking, caring, honest, and meek (but strong in her own way). She is someone who I would love to be like. Not necessarily in her situation, but in her attitude. She fits in with the poorest people and fits in with the high society people effortlessly.

Now for Robin's story...

 Robin Hood 2010
Rating: 4 1/2 stars
Synopsis: In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power.
Starring: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Matthew Macfadyen, Oscar Isaac, and Danny Huston.

This has got to be one of the best renditions of Robin Hood I've ever seen (besides the version with Errol Flynn)! The story is realistic, the screenplay couldn't be better, the cast is superb, and everything else just adds to the story's richness.

One of the things I really liked was Russell Crowe cast as Robin Hood (Robin Longstride in this movie)... he nailed the character. Russell's Robin Hood is the just right age - not too young and inexperienced and not to old to fight.

Cate Blanchett is an excellent Marian Loxley. Some reviews have said that this Marian is a feminist in this version Robin Hood, but such is not the case. Her situation is simple - Marian's husband died at war, her father-in-law is blind and old, and there is no male relatives to run the manor. So Marian has no choice but to step up to keep things going... otherwise she'd lose her home. That whole thing is fixed though, when Robin shows up. So I hope that shows Marian's not the feminist that some people consider this rendition to be.

Marian and Robin match so perfectly, too.

And to top the cake off, Matthew Macfadyen plays none other than the Sheriff of Nottingham. Who wants Marian for his own. Seeing Matthew as Mr. Darcy, then as Mr. Arthur Clennam, and then as the Sheriff, is quite an interesting range of characters! But I like to see actors be able to play bad guys and good guys, so I appreciate that kind of acting.

Now let's go from Nottingham to Wonderland...

Alice in Wonderland 2010
Rating: 5 star
Synopsis: When Alice, now a young 19 year old receives a proposal of marriage from a snobby man, she runs off into the gardens to escape and think about the proposal. Alice falls down a rabbit hole and finds Wonderland. Except this time down the hole it's just a little different. She has a destiny - that includes a Jaberwocky and the evil Red Queen. Will Alice succeed in fufilling her destiny? And will the White Queen regain her rightful place as high queen?
Starring: Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and Alan Rickman.

This was interestingly different from your traditional Alice in Wonderland. The Mad Hatter has a sorrowful background, Alice has a proposal of marriage, and the Red Queen has a sister. This movie I would have to say is not for little kids. It's about the same intensity as the Narnia movies. Only a little stranger. And there were so many interesting pictures from this movie that I had to post them. :)

Mia Wasikowska played a very sickly, nervous, somewhat crazy in the head, but charming Alice very, very well. Only this Alice seems to get stronger (mentally and physically) as the story goes on. And her dress in the picture below is one of my favorites. Mia version of Alice captured my attention, but I think she was almost upstaged by...

...this strange fellow below. Which is none other than the Mad Hatter... played by Johnny Depp. They couldn't have picked a better guy for the job of playing Hatter. He made the Mad Hatter very mad. But the interesting thing was... you really liked this character. His story is so sad, you can't help but like him and hate the Red Queen all the more. I feel so sorry for Hatter... but I will leave you to find that out.

Since we just mentioned the Red Queen we might as well take a look at that large headed, ugly, mean, despicable lady. Oops, did I say that? Wouldn't want to lose my head. *in a whisper* But it's the truth all the same. Helena Bonham Carter really must not want even the people on the Red Queen's side to like their queen! She really made the Red Queen as bad of a queen as could be imagined... possibly something akin to "Bloody Mary".

Anne Hathaway plays a very pale, never hurt a fly White Queen. And she always is holding her hands up near shoulders. Kind of like a ballerina. I actually don't like the White Queen all the time. And the dark lipstick is kind of tacky. But if I was in Wonderland, I'd rather have the White Queen rule over me than the Red Queen.

Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee were interesting in their part in the story. And not quite as annoying as I expected. These two were actually played by one guy, not twins.

The Cheshire Cat is one of my favorite characters in Alice inWonderland. The CG on him is pretty neat. And he has the most curious turquoise eyes.  He was voiced well by Stephen Fry. Definitely a thumbs up on the Cat.
The ending was very well done, and although people may say Alice fighting looks feminist, it was the only way the Jaberwocky and Red Queen could be defeated. All in all this was one well done movie with the detail, plot, acting, and the depth of both scenery and characters.

The next movie review will have to be about a kid's movie... and I know just the one. My younger siblings just love it and we've seen it several times due to the fact that we own it. It's one of their favorites.

8 Question Tag from Emily Grace

1. What was your most memorable birthday and why?
Hmm. They all seem special in their own way. Possibly the birthday coming up soon... my 20th!! :)

2. What was the craziest gift you have ever received?
It's a tie between the fake 1,000,000 dollar bill (I thought it was real at first... boy, am I gullible!) and a bunch of everyday rocks wrapped in tissue paper.

3. What was the most outlandish birthday cake you've ever had?
I don't know that I've had any outlandish ones. Possibly the fanciest I remember was one that I made. It was shaped like a heart (two layer) and was decorated in pink and white with little pink roses.

4. What was the most embarrassing thing you've ever had to do in order to open a present?
Well, when one of my uncles wrap a present, he almost hermetically seals it with scotch tape on all the seams and  folds. This makes it really hard to open. I think it's taken most people anywhere from 5-10 minutes to open these presents. Including me. Using scissors.

5. What was the most thoughtful thing anyone has done for you on your birthday?
Hmm. I got to spend the night at an aunt's house once... someone always tries to do something special every year.

6. Does your family have a 'Birthday Tradition?'
We let the birthday person choose dinner and a movie to watch.

7. What is something you do/receive on every one of your birthdays?
Umm... well the answer to #6 is something I do. Also, if my birthday happens to be on a weekend, then we have my birthday party.

8. What are you planning for your next birthday? (or are you like me and haven't even thought of tomorrow much less it...)
Well, I really haven't planned anything. But I'm kind of looking forward to it. I'll be turning 20, so it just seems kind of amazing that I'm that old.

Ok, now for my questions:

1. Do you tend to be random when you post on a blog, talk, etc.? Or do you tend to stick to one subject?

2. Do you ever play "house" with little siblings? Who do you normally end up being chosen as (mom, aunt, daughter, etc.)?

3. When you wake up in the morning, do you tend to bounce out of bed, or do you gradually lay there for a few minutes?

4. Which are you better at - writing or reading?

5. Do you like rainy days or sunny?

6. If you had to go somewhere and had the choice of walking, riding a horse, or riding a bike, which would you choose?

7. What movie (you can say your top three, if you want) have you seen the most amount of times?

8. Do you laugh during sad parts in a movie (to keep yourself from crying) or do you just cry? How easily do you cry?

Jo's Fiesta de Octobre!!

Jo March is hosting a Fiesta de Octobre (Many of you know already), and these are my answers to her questions...

(If you want to enter, then click on the banner)

{1} It's nearly impossible to pick a favorite book, so what are your top THREE favorite books ? (other than the Bible :D)
Hmm... I would have to say... Christy by Catherine Marshall, Sweet Briar by Brenda Wilbee, and American Anthem by BJ Hoff.
{2} Who is your favorite heroine from literature? (if you need to list more than one, that's fine)
Christy Huddleston (from Christy), Elizabeth Bennet (from Pride and Prejudice), Louisa Boren Denny(from Sweet Briar), Jo March (from Little Woman)
{3} Who is your favorite hero from literature? (see above note)
Mr.Darcy (from Pride and Prejudice), Aurthur Clennam (from Little Dorrit), Gilbert (from Anne of Green Gables), Mr.Knightley (from Emma), Sam Gamgee (from LoTR), Neil McNeil (from Christy)
{4} Who is your favorite author? (see note above)
BJ Hoff, Beverly Lewis, C.S. Lewis, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen
{5} What is your favorite type of book to read?
Either mystery or adventure.
{6} If you could be a character from literature for one day, who would you be? Why?
Maybe Christy Huddleston, because I'm like her so much and well... I love the story. Or else I would want to be Louisa Boren Denny because she was the wife of one of the founders of Seattle, and it would be so neat to be able to go back in time and see what it looked like before the city made the landscape ugly.
{7} What type of reader would you call yourself? Are you an avid reader, passive reader, or even a non-reader??
An AVID READER!! In caps!!
{8} Do you like reading aloud?
No, not normally.
{9} Do you like mystery stories?
Oh, yes!
{10}All of us have read a book at some point or another and disliked the way it ended or who married who, etc. What book(s) bother you like that, and what would you change about them?
Hmm... I can't really think of one. I do wish that the end of Christy elaborated a little more.

{11} Just like books, it's *very* hard to pick a favorite movie. What are you top THREE favorite movies?
Secondhand Lions, Emma (BBC miniseries from 2009), Little Dorrit (BBC miniseries from 2008)... these are not all of my favorite movies by far!! :)
{12} When it comes to movie adaptions of books, are you a purist or do you not mind changes to the storyline?
I am mostly purist on adaptions!
{13} What is your favorite book-to-movie adaption?
Possibly Little Women ('94 version), or else Emma (2009 BBC miniseries)
{14} What is your favorite type of movie to watch?
I like to watch a movie where a character(s) life changes in some way that is drastic and doesn't leave them the same as when the story begins.
{15} Do you like to watch movies with the lights off or on?
I think it would be kind of cool with the lights off, but we normally just leave the lights on because it's better for your eyes.
{16} DVD or VHS?
Haha... DVD! I'm laughing to myself because we have some VHS tapes we haven't been able to watch, so we hooked our VHS player back up... except the little kids don't know what VHS is!! :)
They wanted to know where the menu was, and if we had to stop a tape, they'd suggest that we just position memorize!! It was too funny! :)
{17} When you watch a movie, would you rather watch it straight through or skip around to your favorite scenes?
Watch it straight through!! :)
{18} Subtitles?
Depends... we did it the other day with the "Incredibles" and found out some characters were saying when they were talking fast or mumbling, or something like that.
{19} Do you make comments and ask questions during a movie, or sit in complete silence?
That really depends on how thick the plot is, and whether or not we've watched it before.
{20} If you could be in any movie (whether it's already been made or not) which movie would it be? Who would you want to be and why?
Now, I'm really laughing, because I've made up continuing stories in my mind for almost every movie I've watched... and I'm almost always the heroine. Sound familiar anyone?  But to answer the question... I might want to be Little Dorrit because she's so sweet and the characters around her (and even her herself) are so complex and interesting.

More Pictures...

that I have taken will be coming soon... they are pictures I took when I went to Luray Caverns and some property that used to belong to some ancestors of mine.  They built a house on that property in the Shenandoah Valley in 1730 (and other outbuildings), but the house was destroyed by a tornado in the 1950's. Now all that's left is the chimneys and foundation.  It was neat though. :) But anyway there's a LOT of pictures so sorting and editing is taking a while.

Also there is my 100th post in the near future, and I hope to do a blog party/giveaway... I have to come up with some thing to giveaway, and have an idea, but I am NOT going to tell ya'll.  :)

Hurry and enter - just click on the button below or the one on the sidebar - it ends September 8th!!

1. What has been your favorite part of summer so far?
My trip to Virginia! You can see the pictures I've posted so far of that trip... the rest are a working progress. :)

2. What is your favorite part of autumn?
The leaves changing colors. And curling up in front of the fire with a good book and a cup of spiced cider!

3. Raindrops on roses or whiskers on kittens?
Hmm... I like roses and kittens, but I think I'll go with kittens. :)

4. Describe your dream house.
Somewhere in the South-Eastern part of the United States, in the country on a few acres (enough to farm and be self-sustainable).  I want it to be large and have enough room for me to have several families over at once, but not so large as that I can't keep up with it.  About 5 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, living room, family/sun room, dining room, LARGE kitchen, wrap around porch and patio. Also a creek, swimming pool (I LOVE swimming), barn, horses, chickens, etc. Also be able to decorate and theme each room (apples in the kitchen, duckies in the kid's bathroom, seashore in another, toile in my bedroom, etc.)

5. What's your favorite movie?
Hahaha... I'm just laughing to myself, because you just had to ask this question! :) I have quite a few favorites, but I'll try and pick one... let's see... how about the BBC Emma that came out in 2009?  I love it!!

6. Quote something from the book you most recently read:
"I suppose there's a time in practically every young boy's life when he's affected by that wonderful disease of puppy love."
~ from Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls

7. What do you like/not like about my blog?
I absolutely adore the design of your blog makeover that Awel Prince did for you!

8. Rain or shine?
Shine, shine, shine!

9. The worst grammatical mistake, in your opinion:
Saying "like" in the wrong context... it's one of my pet peeves!

10. If you had a choice, would you want to live: in the mountains, in a rainforest, on a prairie, or by the beach?
This is a toss up between the mountains and the beach... but I think I'll choose the beach.

11. What character from a book would you say you are most like?
Christy Huddleston from Christy by Catherine Marshall.

12. Be constantly talking the rest of your life or not be able to communicate in any way for the rest of your life?
Oh my goodness!! If I wasn't able to communicate for the rest of my life, I think I'd die sooner!! I'd rather talk the rest of my life!!

13. Owl City or Switchfoot?
Neither.

14. Taylor Swift or Selena Gomez?
Neither.

15. Your pet peeve?
Which one should I pick? All right... I HATE the droopy pants and loose shirts of so many young men in today's world, and the tight, belly showing clothes of the girls (not to mention bikinis!!)!!

16. What's your favorite font?
Wow... I don't really have one. It depends on what I'm using it for. One of the ones I like is your header font. I don't like Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica, Trebuchet, or Verdana, just to name a few.

17. How are you educated? (i.e. homeschooled, public schooled, private schooled)
Home schooled all the way! There's no other way I'd have it!

18. Do you consider yourself tomboy-ish or feminine?
I used to consider myself a mix of the two, but I'm definitely feminine now (I'm the Birkenstock sandal, tiered skirt, laid back feminine - although I love to ooh and aah over wedding dresses, period dresses, etc.)!!

19. What's your favorite song?
You sure do like to ask hard questions (at least for me to answer)! Amazing Grace, I'll Fly Away, Dueling Violins, Me and God, Country Road, the list goes on...

20. Did you enjoy answering these questions?
Yes... they were challenging!!:) Thank you Guinevere!

"I Write Like" Test Two

I took the "I write like" test again using a different post that I did. Here's what else it came up with.

I write like
William Shakespeare
I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

I like this one much better than the last one I did (in fact I love it). Although I love watching Shakespeare, I have somewhat of a hard time reading it, what with all the fancy mumbo-jumbo language. I'm a visual person.

The "HUGE Bug!" Experience

This is probably something akin to what I looked like a few nights ago. No, no, not like the donkey - like the kid. And no, this story does not have anything to do with donkeys.

(And just for in case you can't see what the caption says, it says "They will eat you alive.")

 Let me explain...

On... let me think... Wednesday night, my aunt and I had come home from the grocery store (we almost hit a fox or coyote or something like that on the way home, too!) and my aunt had just squished a spider on the ceiling.  So I went into the bathroom to get some toilet paper to wipe up the spider mess... and as I stepped in the door, something on the LARGE side flew up and then straight towards me.  This was the bathroom next to the kitchen, and I hadn't turned any lights on in that area, so it was quite dark.  When this thing flew straight at me, I screamed in surprise and terror (and I don't normally scream unless I'm really, truly scared/startled badly) and ran to the living room where the light was on (this is where the look on the scared kid's face comes in).  My aunt came back downstairs asking me what was the matter.  My reply was something like: "I went into the bathroom and *gulp, gasp*  a HUGE thing flew straight at me *gulp, gasp*!! I don't know what it was *gulp, gasp*!! It made a flapping noise, flew like a butterfly, and flew all around like crazy*gulp, gasp*!!!!!!!"  I was saying all this while gasping because my heart was in my throat and sometimes using my hands to describe the terrible beast (and I was perhaps losing my head a little, because when I get scared, I get scared for real)

We knew that the thing had flown into the kitchen and hid somewhere, so I decided to try and squish the very large bug with my aunt's sandal and a bug zapper.  But I eventually gave up because it was getting late and I was tired. So I went to bed.

The next day we didn't find out what it was... until it was night again, naturally.

I was getting ready for bed the next night and had come out into the hall, when I heard my aunt exclaim from downstairs "Oh, my goodness, it's a BAT!!!" and come partly up the stairs. When it flew towards her again, she came all the way up the stairs. Well, to make a long story short, I went downstairs determined to save the baby cousin out of the baby swing and away from the terrible beastly bat. The baby was rescued, and I caught the bat with a sheet. Now, we thought it was such a huge ghastly creature (it sure seemed that way when it was flying straight at us) but really had only about a foot long swing span, and it's body length was about the length of my palm - about 3 1.2 - 4 in. It was just a small fruit bat, but had caused so much trouble!! :) Oh, yes, and here are a couple pictures...

You can see how big he is compared to the screw to the above left of him.

The little trouble maker caught (and making a lot of squeaking/screeching)!!

And I have to admit, the little guy was pretty cute, but I sure wasn't about to ask my aunt to keep him!! :) Now we laugh at the fact that the night that I got scared from it I was only armed with a bug zapper and a sandal! :)

And to reassure ya'll, I just set the unharmed bat free - outside.
